You wrote to me on 19th March about the Chinese Government's claims in respect of railway material requisitioned in Hong Kong in 1941 on behalf of the War Office, and in his note of 5th April, my Private Secretary told you that enquiries were being made of the War Office as to the present position.

I am extremely sorry I have been unable to write to you earlier on the subject. The position is that the claims, which are somewhat complicated, are still under active examination in the War Office; but I an assured that that Department will be getting into touch with you on the matter at a very early date.

I need hardly say that, for the reasons you gave in your letter, I am myself most anxious that these claims should be disposed of. If you feel that I can assist further in any way I hope you will not hesitate to write to me again.

J.A. Keswick, Esq.

(Sgd.) A. Creech Jones.
